At Apple Tree Learning Center, we believe that feelings of self-worth enhance a child’s capacity for learning. A well-adjusted, confident child is more receptive to learning. Our goal is to prepare your child for the elementary school system, whether public or private. Academic subjects, though necessary and important, must be taught with care and foresight. Too much focus on academic subjects can over-qualify a child for school, causing boredom and lack of interest in school in later years. Our staff is trained to balance social development with academic development, allowing children to enter the elementary system in comfort.

Children learn at many different levels. For that reason, each teacher’s schedule will vary to accommodate the ages and ability levels of the children in his or her classroom.
Reading / Spelling
Reading is one of life’s most enjoyable experiences. It opens a child’s mind to a whole new world of dreams and ideas. Success in reading requires practicing many basic skills.
In addition to our reading program, we also offer vocabulary expansion. A vocabulary list is drawn from selected reading and given to each child for study. At the end of each week, a spelling test is given. This vocabulary expansion will aid your child in his or her everyday reading.
English / Writing
Our English and writing program is designed to develop effective speaking and writing skills. Good penmanship is stressed in our writing program. Writing helps the child to develop his or her writing ability to the fullest.
Mathematics
Our math curriculum is designed to meet the needs of all children. Our focus intertwines math skills with reading skills, allowing children to naturally progress into modes of logical thinking and problem solving. To promote curiosity and increase motivation, a wide variety of materials is introduced to the children. These materials require manipulation of measurements, money, time, weights, addition and subtraction.
Science
A sense of mastery and knowledge of the surrounding environment is emphasized to encourage our budding scientists. Through direct manipulation and questioning, our children are allowed to explore and experiment with the world they live in.
Language
Language plays an important role in self-expression. Each child is given time and is encouraged to express what he or she sees, does and thinks.
History and Social Studies
Our program is designed to introduce children to various cultures, thereby promoting respect for and appreciation of the many types of people with whom we share this globe. Our focus will be on the history of the United States and on current events.
Art and Music
Appreciation of the fine arts is encouraged via self-expression through the manipulation of various materials. Our children are introduced to paints and drawing materials, clay / dough, crafts, musical instruments and expression through song.
Computers
Classroom computers are used on a daily basis and a variety of programs are explored. We use Living Books, science, math and new programs as they become available. Children are allowed to explore individual programs on their own.
Report Cards
Report cards are issued three times a year (in November, March and June) to allow parents to actively share in and witness the progress of their children.
Parents
A necessary part of a child’s education is parental involvement. Your child’s education continues at home. They need your help and encouragement with homework, daily reading and family support.
Conferences
Conferences are scheduled at the end of the first semester. Appointments may also be made at any other time parents have questions. Our staff is always pleased to meet with parents. A special Open House is planned each year to encourage parent-teacher interaction. This will allow parents to tour the school and raise any concerns or questions.
